The Fastest Moving Clouds Ever!

The Prandtl-Glauert Singularity Effect is a spectacular phenomenon that causes a clearly visible condensation cloud - a “vapor cone” - that often surrounds an aircraft travelling at transonic speeds. The effect is usually observed on humid days only.

This is what happens… (non-technical explanation)

Step 1
An accelerating airplane flies through moist air…

Step 2
The air particles that hit the aircraft’s skin are piled up (close to the aircraft’s skin)…

Step 3
When the aircraft approaches transonic speed (just below the speed of sound), the pile of air particles can’t withstand the increased airspeed anymore and collapses, causing a sudden drop in pressure and temperature (a process known as adiabatic cooling).

Step 4
That drop in air temperature causes the water vapor - present in the moist atmosphere - to condense: a cloud!

New Rocket Burns Fuel from Outer Space

Nasa successfully tested a new rocket that has the potential to collect its fuel from outer space.

While most NASA rockets are powered by either a combination of liquid oxygen and hydrogen, or solid chemicals, this rocket burns methane, a gas which can be harvested from Mars, Titan, Jupiter, and many other planets and moons in outer space.

“With fuel waiting at the destination, a rocket leaving Earth wouldn’t have to carry so much propellant, reducing the cost of a mission”, explains Nasa…

Mars and Titan…

Although Mars is not rich in methane, methane can be manufactured there via the Sabatier process.

On Saturn’s moon Titan, it is literally raining liquid methane. Titan is dotted with lakes and rivers of methane and other hydrocarbons that could one day serve as fuel depots.

So why hasn’t this been done before?
The use of methane offers lots of advantages. The gas remains liquid at much warmer temperatures. On Earth, fuel tanks wouldn’t need as much insulation to protect the gas from exterior heat. This makes the fuel tank lighter.

The tanks could also be smaller, because liquid methane is denser than liquid hydrogen.

All in all, lighter and smaller tanks are cheaper to launch, …

But unlike traditional rockets, methane needs an ignition source to ignite. The colder it gets (outer space temperatures drop to hundreds of degrees below zero), the more difficult it is to guarantee ignition. Nasa scientists are working on that problem right now!

World’s Smallest Helicopter

The GEN H-4 is the world’s smallest “manned” helicopter. Build by Japan’s Gene corporation, and distributed in the US by Ace Craft, the aircraft sells as an assembly kit for approximately $35,000.

The helicopter is powered by 4 lightweight 125 cc 2-cylinder engines and easily maintains straight and level flight should one engine fail. In the unlikely event that 2 engines fail at the same time, the small helicopter maintains its controllability, allowing the pilot to make a quick and safe emergency landing. A ballistic parachute above the mast is provided as well (just in case).

Two sets of coaxial, contra-rotating rotors eliminate the need for a tail rotor (no torque). Each rotor has a length of 4 meters (13 feet) making this craft easy to land in confined areas.

The GEN H-4 can fly to a maximum altitude of 1000 meters at a top speed of 90 km/hr (55 mph) for up to 60 minutes (depending on payload).

The inventors claim that anyone can master the H-4 in less than 2 hours (I seriously doubt that), and in some countries, you won’t need a pilot licence to fly it.

Anyway, since I am a helicopter pilot myself (R22), I would love to try this one (just once).

Giant Octopus Attacks Sub

Canadian researchers working off the west coast of Vancouver Island were shocked when a giant octopus attacked their expensive mini submarine.

The operator of the remote-controlled submarine tried to protect his $200,000 “uninsured” equipment and switched the thrusters to full reverse in an attempt to blast the sea creature with seabed particles. And it worked. The giant octopus, a mature male weighing over 45 kg, lost its appetite and let go.

The rare footage you’re about to see is believed to be the first documented attack of an octopus on a sub.

A Waist As Small As a CD

Cathie Jung is the current world record holder for the world’s smallest waist on a living person. The 70-year-old woman from Connecticut, USA, managed to shrink her waist to just 15 inches. That’s about the size (circumference) of a CD, which is 14.8 inches or 37.68 cm.

However, Cathie doesn’t have the world’s smallest waist ever. A British woman named Ethel Granger, who died in 1974, still holds that record. Her waist measured just 13 inches around.

the Yonaguni Monument

The Yonaguni monument
The Yonaguni monument is a massive sunken structure, named after one of the many islands along the south coast of Japan where the underwater ruins were found. It was discovered by Japanese scuba diver Kihachiro Aratake in March 1985.

Pictures and Video
The site consists of what appears to be massive Inca-like structures and includes a face statue, an alter (or stage), “carved” steps, flat terraces, platforms and much more. Have a look at these pictures. What do you think? Man made or not?

8000 years old
Some scientists believe that the Yonaguni monument was a “real city” 8000 years ago, and that by the end of the last ice age - when the ice melted and sea levels rose - it was covered under water.

If it really is that old and “man”-made, then history books need to be rewritten…

The legend… and CNN…
Just like Atlantis, Lemuria and Mu are interchangeable names given to what is believed to be a lost and sunken land or civilisation. CNN mistakenly referred to Mu as the lost world of Muin. World’s Highest Kiddie Pool Dive

Daredevil Darren Taylor from Denver, Colorado, jumped from a height of 35 feet and 2 inches (10.7 m) into a kiddie pool … with only 12 inches of water in it (12 inches = 1 foot = 30.48 cm).

Darren, who names himself Professor Splash, made the world record jump on July 25, 2007 for a Japanese TV show.

Seeing Is Believing? Not Anymore!

We sometimes say “seeing is believing”, but in the very near future, that won’t be the case anymore. Graphics used to create a Virtual Reality will soon reach a point of hyper realism, and the next level reality - known as Augmented Reality - will fool a human brain even more.

Let’s compare both technologies and realities…

Virtual reality
Virtual reality (VR) is a technology which allows a user to interact with a computer-simulated environment. Usually, that simulated environment is very similar to the real world.

A good example of Virtual Reality is the use of full motion flight simulators used for pilot training.

Augmented reality
Augmented reality (AR) combines virtual reality elements with real-world elements. When wearing a special pair of goggles for example, The AR user could see both the real world, as well as computer-generated (virtual 3D) images projected on top of that world.

The experience is mind-blowing because the virtual elements interact with the presence of the real world elements in real time. That specific interactive effect is obtained by the implementation of real time “motion tracking”.

Most applications of AR need personal display glasses, but any output device, even a simple computer screen, is sufficient to demonstrate this amazing technology.

What you’re about to see in the next video demonstration is no trick. During this 2004 demonstration, the augmented reality images were projected behind the demonstrator’s back in real time. That’s exactly what you’ll see in this video.

Like I said: No tricks involved. The result is mind-blowing!

Do Bats Mate Upside Down?

Have you ever tried to swallow while hanging upside-down? Bats can do much more than that. They eat, rest and sleep upside down, and most bats give birth in that position as well.

But how about mating? Do bats mate upside-down as well?

A couple of kids are visiting a local farm. Highlight of the trip is a “giant” pig named “Gertrude”, and farmer Bob assists a volunteer to feed her an apple. “You got to be brave”, says Bob…

I like this video a lot. It reminds me of the good old days when I was a young boy. It was a perfect world back then (when I think about it now). This video transported me back in time and allowed me to feel that “perfect world” one more time, just like a time machine would do. That’s why I posted it here.

Free-diving to The Danger Zone

Some of the world’s best underwater athletes continuously attempt to attain greater depths, times and distances on a single breath of air in a variety of breath holding competitions.

That dangerous sport is called free-diving, and just recently, two new and very spectacular world records were broken (again), setting new boundaries for the next danger zone.

Amazing Figures…
Amazingly, the total distance travelled underwater without fins for two completely different disciplines - diving vertically (back and forth - 166 m) and “swimming” horizontally (186 m) - are very comparable…

…they only differ by 20 meters!

Going Vertically…
On August 8, 2007, Martin Stepanek set the freediving world record (constant weight without fins) to a depth of 83m (272ft).

That’s a travel distance of 166 meters in total - or 3:28 long minutes - without taking a single breath: 83 meters one way and 83 meters the other way. Pretty amazing!

This record dive was accomplished at the Sony “Free Like No Other” event In Dahab, Egypt. Watch that video…

Going Horizontally…
“Dynamic apnea without fins” is another free-diving discipline where freedivers try to swim the furthest possible distance underwater horizontally (without breathing of course).

The current world record is 186 meters and was set by Danish freediver Stig Aavall Severinsen on July 7, 2007 in Maribor, Slovenia. A Real Media Video of that event is available on this page. (P.S. If anyone knows how long Stig stayed underwater, please let me know. Thanks!)

The next video shows previous record holder Tom Sietas (180 m) during a practice run of 166 meters. (At this time, Tom Sietas prepares himself to break the current 186 meter world record.)

11,000 Passengers In One Airship!

If Victor Prokhorov - CEO of Russian based LocomoSky - is right, his new airship will be able to transport very large and very heavy cargoes to inaccessible areas at top speeds of up to 250 km per hour!

Two variations are on the drawing table already:

The LSGA : a cargo-only version capable of lifting up to 600 tons
The LSGPA : a passenger version capable of transporting up to 11,000 people at a time (that’s eleven thousand !!!)

In 1992, a first attempt was made to test a smaller but similar airship - the ALA-40 - designed to lift up to 6 tons.

Rumors say the United States Air force is experimenting with similar designs as well.
